PINK1/Parkin
The sensor–tag pair that marks damaged mitochondria for selective recycling (mitophagy).
Role in aging
PINK1 accumulates on depolarized (damaged) mitochondria and recruits Parkin to tag them for autophagic clearance. Failing mitophagy lets dysfunctional mitochondria accumulate, leaking ROS and driving inflammaging — the gap urolithin A is studied to address.
