What Tocotrienols (Vitamin E) does
"Vitamin E" is eight molecules — four tocopherols and four tocotrienols (α, β, γ, δ each). Ordinary supplements are almost all α-tocopherol; tocotrienols are the less-common half, distinguished by an unsaturated tail that lets them distribute more fluidly through cell membranes. Tocotrienols work in the lipid phase: they intercept lipid peroxidation in membranes and lipoproteins more mobilely than α-tocopherol, and δ/γ isoforms post-transcriptionally degrade HMG-CoA reductase to modestly lower LDL. They also downregulate NF-κB-driven inflammation. One practical wrinkle matters: high-dose α-tocopherol competes with tocotrienol absorption and can blunt its benefits, so tocotrienol products are best taken apart from large α-tocopherol doses. Being fat-soluble, they require co-ingested fat for uptake.
