What oral hyaluronic acid does (and why oral is mechanistically strange)
Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan, HA) is a non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan — long repeating chains of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine — that forms the water-holding scaffold of skin dermis, joint synovial fluid, and cartilage. Oral HA is a different problem entirely. Consensus: Tier B for the two things it's actually been tested for — skin hydration/wrinkle appearance (the strongest, most-replicated signal, now with a 7-trial meta-analysis behind it) and knee-OA symptom relief (smaller, single-trial evidence, but consistent in direction with the OA literature on HA generally).
